A balcony garden provides the city dweller with a patch of greenery against the background of a grey concrete jungle. These also provide an incredible sense of freedom with a relaxing getaway that’s also great for entertaining.

Step 1 – Plan

Consider sun and exposure, water, maintenance and accessibility – these factors will affect the type of plants for your design and style.

Plan how you will use the space; the balcony can be used as an extension of your entertainment area or you can treat it as an outdoor room.

Keep things simple, low-maintenance and user-friendly.

Step 2 – Plant selection

It is always a good idea to seek advice from your local nursery as to which plants will best thrive. You may want to consider planting your favorite herbs which will look great overflowing from pots.

Step 3 – Potting

Select containers that fit the style of both your home and garden.

Any container can be used as long as it is not too heavy for the balcony structure.

Pots should have holes for drainage.

Nutrients are easily sucked out of potted plants because of repeated watering. This means that regular feeding is necessary. Good potting soils and fertilisers are readily available at all reputable nurseries.

Step 4 – Accessorise

Furnish and decorate the space with comfy seating, cushions and outdoor rugs.

Complete your outdoor experience with artificial grass for the manicured lawn look.

Make sure the plants, furniture and ornamentation are in proportion to the space you have available.

Step 5 – Maintenance

Take the time to take care of your plants, and enjoy.
