80’s Rewind – Durban

The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway is rewinding back in time as they prepare stage the most daring 80’s rock show ever, 80’s Rewind, through the festive season from 14 October to 11 January 2015.

Yes, they are talking retro fashion, dance and, of course, music that will bring audiences an evening packed with the most delightful surprises. The show features a colourful and versatile cast that will rewind to synth pop, new wave and arena rock in the most authentic 80’s style.

It was the golden age of synthesizer hits with and energetic anthems and, with everything from big hair and tight clothes to epic guitar solos and incredible voices, the 80’s is considered to be the greatest era in music.

It was an important time in musical history. MTV brought about the music video, giving us a whole new way to enjoy pop music; rap became main stream and exploded into what we know today as hip hop; the term “one hit wonder” entered into the vernacular; metal bands ruled the country; and there were the breakout successes of iconic pop superstars Madonna, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.

New wave music was part punk, part dance and part kitsch and made for some great pop hits. The synthesizer was the instrument of choice, and the music was danceable and fun.

MTV brought about a second British invasion with new wave bands like Duran Duran, The Police and Dire Straits, while on the pop synth scene we witnessed the likes of Culture Club and Depeche Mode. Alternative music also made its mark during this diverse decade with bands such as REM, The Cure and The Violent Femmes.
