Albert Court apartment

Written by Jess Binns

Nestled in the heart of South Kensington, London, is the 19th century mansion block Albert Court. It’s in this block that two adjacent apartments have been turned into one, to serve as a single residence.

Here, Madrid-based architect and designer Teresa Sapey, who is famed for her work on the Hotel Pureta America in Madrid, shows that her talents lie not only in hospitality, but with high-end apartments too. The 667m2 conversion is a showcase for the retention of historical components, while incorporating timeless and futuristic elements that ensure the property is not “stuck in the past”.

Sapey reflects: “We aim to establish a unique relationship between past, present and future architectural styles in a high-end unprecedented apartment with no style or geographical barriers – the contemporary home.”

Working with a range of mediums, Sapey has indeed succeeded in transforming this property in to a contemporary home. A mix of parquet, marble and carpet for the floors sets off the ornate ceilings and generously sized sash windows. Statement lighting, custom cabinetry and the introduction of colour bring the modern, futuristic edge.

I must say that I enjoy this style of designing, where the integrity of the building is celebrated, but not worshipped.

Best wishes,
