The story of this home is one of new beginnings, a tale of reinvention and commitment that symbolises a never-ending love within this family and its home.

It all started when a family of four was introduced to a house in the very popular estate in Salt Rock, on the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. “A close friend, who is also an estate agent, introduced us to this home. Then, after reading the reviews on the estate on the internet, we visited and fell in love with the place,” explains the owner.

As it stood, the house lacked the quality and finishes the owners were looking for. They decided to strip the house back and to start the interior and exterior finishes anew; the construction company worked methodically through the house to remodernise and restructure it. Working closely with the owners and their interior designer, they settled on a subtle palette of tonal greys, with a combination of wood, steel, stone and glass.

As you explore, there’s a distinct air of elegance, married with a modern freshness. The reflective stone flooring, which runs throughout, gives a wonderful creamy-white base. The interiors follow suit, contrasting softly with the use of the signature greys. No loud statement colours are found here; each space is as calm and quiet as the next.

Describing their taste as classical, yet modern, the owners enjoyed their working relationship with the interior designers. “They understood us perfectly and were patient, as we kept changing our minds at times.”

The living area is linked directly to the deck and swimming pool by way of frameless glass doors that fold back, blurring the boundary lines. This is the family’s favourite area in the home. In such a warm climate, the open-plan nature of the house and easy access to the outdoors give this home versatility to cater for every season.

“We can all be in close proximity of one another, sharing this beautiful space, while, at the same time, we each have our own space.”

The open-plan kitchen is set against the deepest of greys, a backdrop which cleverly draws the functional area away from the dining and living space. The sleek, white kitchen island appears to float off the floor. Reflecting the same shape as the island is the band of appliances framed and set within the back cabinetry, projecting out just enough to make this a unique and eyecatching feature.

Tactile fabrics make an appearance in the bedrooms, from satins to luxury vinyls, from faux fur throws to rich velvets. Taking on more of a steely-grey tone is the master bedroom. The oversized, padded headboard almost reaches the ceiling, a bold statement that anchors the bed within the space.

Framing the headboard are smoked glass pendants falling at different heights, functional as reading lights at night, but offering a stylish aesthetic. During the day, natural light hits various surfaces, bringing the room alive with a soft glow.

Everything in this home has been carefully thought through, drawing your eye from one beautifully finished area to the next. You can see the attention to detail that makes this renovation so special, and why this home is the very anchor of the family.
