Reinventing the bachelor pad

Situated high above the city’s skyline, Newtown in central Johannesburg is not where this home owner thought he would find his perfect home.

The inner city has been dubbed the new “it” area for up-and-coming home owners to invest in and is fast becoming the most fashionable location to see and be seen in.

“The city is safe at night contrary to popular belief. My apartment falls within the ‘Urban Development Zone’ (UDZ) where streets are swept clean every day, there are CCTV cameras on every street corner, with patrolmen on others, and to top it off, restaurants and businesses are moving back into town which is great,” explains the home owner.

Having spent some time in New York and Los Angeles, the owner was in awe of the idea of inner city living and being in the hub of activity.

The apartment’s interior reconstruction was designed by Antoni Architects, which created a fuss-free open-plan haven. By focusing on optimising space utilisation, Stefan Antoni was able to transform the apartment into a very free-flowing, clean-line, comfortable unit.

Being so open plan, Stefan built the bedroom on a four-step platform, creating a clear division without the need for an obtrusive solid wall. Each room looks onto the next, taking in the view – which is unbelievable at night – but retains its individual character due to the great design and perfectly chosen furnishings and fittings. “I’m an easy guy and hate complications and wanted the apartment to reflect that,” adds the owner.

Every item from hard furniture to paintings was meticulously chosen, by the home owner himself, to guarantee his dream home became a reality and to complement the trendy setting of a town which has been brought back to life.
