Lisbon garage turned home

Written by Jess Binns

Basic really can be beautiful – you needn’t look further than this converted garage in Lisbon, Portugal. The owners of this 200m2 ground-floor garage, situated under a residential block, looked to Fala Atelier, a local architectural practice, to turn the then-dingy and uninspiring space into a place they could call home.

Working to a tight budget, Atelier kept major changes to a minimum. The space was treated to a new polished concrete floor, walls and ceilings, given a fresh coat of white paint, and existing skylights were either enhanced or moved to suit the new layout. Two bathrooms are situated behind a newly built curved wall, providing the only fixed privacy this home has. All other “walls” are in the form of giant blue curtains, making a bold statement against the sedate backdrop.

The marble kitchen stands out as a work of art, elegantly angled to echo the curved corner opposite. A playful oven extractor is just one of the whimsical items that finish off the space.

It’s certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, but the inventiveness within such restricted parameters has produced a showcase of note.

Best wishes,
