Out of the blue

Blue is a colour that never goes out of fashion in the decor world; its longevity has much to do with its versatility. A peaceful shade of sky and a sophisticated royal hue, mix well with other colours and can create a variety of moods. In this house, blue has been used throughout to good effect.

A bright peacock shade for the open-plan kitchen/dining space is a brave move, but pairing it with rustic French-inspired furniture and using it only as a half-wall have ensured the space has a relaxed feel that’s perfect for entertaining.

In the lounge, the atmosphere is more formal. Although not normally associated with cosiness, a dark hue combined with wooden furniture and warm ambient lighting make this a comfortable spot. One of the most striking rooms in the home is the downstairs bathroom. With walls covered in paisley print, it’s the soft tones of blue that quiet the space.

Upstairs, tranquillity reigns. While the bold wallpaper takes the focus on one wall of the main bedroom, it is softened by the calming mix of stone, yellow and eggshell blue soft furnishings.

The walk-through closet leads to a large en-suite, its focal point a freestanding bath. The room keeps to a white and natural palette, but is not without its touch of blue, working here as an accent in the vanity.

From bold and bright to serene and soothing, from living areas to bedrooms, as this home shows, blue’s potential is limitless.
