The Buchanan Hotel

Written by Jess Binns

Having opened its doors last year, it appears the latest boutique hotel in the Kimpton group is going from strength to strength.

The Buchanan is situated on the fringes of three San Francisco neighbourhoods: Japantown, Fillmore District and Pacific Heights. Taking influence from the surrounding areas, interior design firm Nicole Hollis used an exciting blend of finishes to give the Buchanan its distinctive edge. “We wanted to pay homage to urban life, without being literal. We channelled a sultry materials palette of charred wood, hand-dyed indigo and locally made items. The result is a bohemian hideaway that’s elegant, easy, and blends seamlessly with its surrounding environment.”

Nowhere is this more evident than in the striking lobby. Dark, muted colours make the perfect backdrop for the gallery of local art, a plethora of overlapping rugs adds a warm, welcoming vibe, while the feature ceiling of recycled whisky bottles brings a quirky, yet elegant air to the space.

All of the rooms have contemporary Far East touches inspired by Japantown. Shibori print cushions, Japanese pottery and the complementary kimono robes are just some of the examples.
Although I have never been there, I’m quite taken with what I see and read. If San Francisco is on your destination list this year, why not go and check out what all the hype is about for yourself?

Best wishes,
