Situated in the Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate, this home was designed to frame its beautiful surrounds. “We knew we had to maximise the north and northeast views of the award-winning Jack Nicklaus golf course,” explain the home owners. So with this in mind, their brief to the architects was simple: to build a modern home that makes the most of their view, while providing plenty of light and space.

Designed by Hugo van der Walt of StudioTect Architects, the home draws on brick, stone, steel and concrete to complement the architectural language of its surrounds. To bring the outdoors in and showcase the panoramic views of the golf course and natural wetlands of the Serengeti, extra-tall stack doors, double-volume ceilings and glass displays were incorporated.

“Glass is used generously throughout the house to create an elegant and sophisticated ambience, especially at night,” says the owner. “One of the prominent features of this house is the glass wall enclosing the staircase. It is truly breathtaking and a one-of-its-kind in the estate.”

Inside, each room flows into the next, keeping sight lines open to lengthen the spaces visually. With a neutral colour palette, a subtle mix of textures and understated details, the home is also modern, without being clinical. In some rooms, the home’s mostly white palette has been paired with rich wooden floors and furnishings, making the space warm and more inviting.

“Our decor theme is simplistic, yet contemporary, with a splash of colour added by the artworks,” says the owner. “We have numerous textured and feature walls, as well as walls with different colours.”

This is best illustrated in the kitchen, where the splashback is made from a textured tile that brings dimension to the clean, neutral space. The kitchen also has horizontal stacked windows above the countertops, once again letting the view take the stage.

With a contemporary open-plan design, an abundance of air and sunlight, and views of beautiful natural landscapes, the entire home creates a sense of calm.
