Buying a bed?

Written by Esther Moloi

Often we forget that buying a bed is actually an investment that affects our overall health.

On average, we spend a third of our life sleeping, so it makes sense to invest in a bed that offers optimum sleep, allowing us to wake up ready to tackle the day ahead. Tossing and turning at night is a sign that we may need to purchase a new bed. A good bed should last between five and 10 years, so it is wise to choose something that will stand the test of time.

Below are a few tips to help you to purchase a bed that is perfect for you:

Do your homework

Work out a budget that will determine how much you have to spend towards the purchase of a new bed. Once you have an idea of your price range, look around to see which options are available within that range, and see if there are any promotional offers available from the various retailers. You can easily search through the various websites before visiting the retail stores. Once you have found the base sets you may be interested in, you can now visit the different stores.

Test the beds

Before making a purchase, it is important to try out the bed. This will enable you to decide whether a firm or soft mattress is the one for you. Visit the various retailers. You should sit and lie on the bed so you can feel the different comfort levels. It is not advisable to choose a bed by simply poking it with your hand. Once you have found a comfort level that speaks to your needs, you are ready to make a decision based on the various brands on offer.

Size me up

The size of your bed should depend on what your needs are. A quick guide to choosing the right size:
A single bed: Suitable for one adult or child (measures 92cm in width)
A double bed: Suitable for two people of a small posture or one person of a large posture (measures 137cm in width)
A queen-size bed: Suitable for two people of large posture (measures 152cm in width)
A king-size bed: Can accommodate two people of any size in superb comfort (measures 182cm in width)

Accessorise it

Lastly, a bed is not just about your base set; you need to add a number of accessories in order to create the perfect sleeping environment. Choose the right pillows, duvet covers and mattress protectors that will enhance your investment by upping the comfort of your bed.
