Washi tape is functional and pretty. It comes in an array of patterns and colours, and is easy to remove without damage or residue. It’s the perfect material to use to decorate a room or personalise an item. Go ahead and give these ideas a try…

  • Use it as wallpaper. Geometric shapes or even a tree-branch design on a feature wall will really stand out.
  • Layer a pattern onto a blank canvas and hang it up. Or do a few together.
  • Run colourful stripes down a staircase – preferably along the edges or wherever there’s the least foot traffic to avoid scuffing.
  • Create a custom coffee or side table with a criss-cross or zig-zag pattern. When you’re done, tape up a tea tray to match.
  • Go wild in a playroom – create a race track or hopscotch outline on the floor, or ‘draw’ a temporary mural on the wall. The straight lines of Washi tape make it easy to outline houses, trees, chimneys and such.
  • Dress up a light-switch plate or stick stripes around the blades of a plain-white ceiling fan for a spinning colour wheel!
  • Encircle glass candle-holders, vases, bottles and jars at the neck, base or around the centre. Mix and match them.
  • Customise a bookshelf by running strips of Washi tape along the edges. In fact, you can border any shelving/storage unit for a quick splash of colour.
  • Make fridge magnets. We all receive ‘junk mail’ magnets. Simply peel off any paper attached to the flat magnet and stick Washi tape over it. Trim the ends unevenly to give the appearance of torn tape.
  • Outline a wardrobe or bedroom door with a single, solid-colour stripe using extra-wide Washi tape.
  • Cover block letters or tape words and motivational quotes directly onto a wall.
  • Add some festive cheer. Decorate a fireplace mantle, create snowflakes, stars or a Christmas-tree triangle on a wall. A Washi-inspired wreath would also do the trick on a glass sliding door. Happy sticking!
