Dramatic transformation

Written by Jess Binns

Wherever you are in the world, there will always be what many of us refer to as “ugly” buildings – buildings that were constructed in a period of time when there was little or no focus on aesthetic quality. Or perhaps it’s the type of architecture we associate with tough times, creating a negative air around such structures.

This begs the question of what to do with these eyesores.

This leads me to the work of Studio 11, an architectural and interior design firm based in Belarus. Surrounded by Soviet-era, ’70s buildings, its solution has been to fully embrace the harsh elements of this type of architecture, and to create a positive relationship through clever design and detailing.

The office you see here is in Minsk. It bears many of the old public-building hallmarks, such as broken tile paving and rough wall finishes. Studio 11 worked its magic to bring out the best in the original features. Rose-tinted glass bricks, 3D wall tiles and interesting use of paint have helped to turn this office into a design-savvy space that is globally on-trend. The transformation has given this once-sombre space an exciting new lease on life.
