East meets West

Written by Jess Binns

At the beginning of a brand new year, I wonder what’s in store for the world of interiors. Trend forecasting is sending us in all different directions, so what’s the best path to take? I always look to the rest of the world for inspiration, and what I’m seeing is that so is everyone else!

The result is a blending of global styles to suit our diverse lifestyles. For me, this is something to look out for in 2017.

To give you an example, this 250m2 apartment in Donggaun, southeast China, embraces Western design principles alongside the Eastern lifestyle requirements that any middle-class Chinese family adheres to. Minas Kosmidis, a Greek architectural firm, collaborated with Chinese interior designers YuQiang & Partners to create a home that truly embodies diversity.

Sensitive to the need for “zones”, this vast, open-plan apartment has been divided into “day” and “night” activities. Glass walls, in the style of traditional Chinese screens, act as dividers, ensuring light penetrates every corner. The interior captures a minimal, yet inviting ambience. The use of rich, warm tones softens modern elements; feature lighting brings an intimacy to what would be formal areas, such as the “tea ceremony” table.

What’s clear is that this apartment could sit happily anywhere in the world. There’s something very comforting to take from that. Design should be about unification across the globe. I truly believe this is where the path leads….

Best wishes,
