Stepping inside this home, you might be surprised to learn that it is a recent build and not one of the original family houses that are to be found in this established suburb of Johannesburg.

Older items of furniture, Persian rugs and a fine collection of artwork have been cleverly combined with a fresh decor scheme and contemporary finishes, including high-gloss cabinetry and LED lighting, to contribute to its lived-in yet sophisticated feel.

While the single-storey house has only two bedrooms, there is a sense of space, thanks to the high ceilings, incorporation of natural light and an open plan layout in the living areas that is extended to the veranda through glass doors. This outdoor area is ideal for entertaining, as it can be enclosed in inclement weather or opened to the garden, with its trees, benches and striking sculpture, when it’s a beautiful Highveld day.

In fact, the house is full of practical features such as this. The large kitchen, for example, has ample workspace and plenty of cupboards and drawers to keep surfaces clutter-free. A gas fireplace in the TV room is a low-maintenance method of keeping the area cosy, while shutters in the bedrooms and bathrooms control the temperature and maintain a sense of privacy.

A palette of grey, blue, pink and white has been used throughout the house, for cohesion.

These soft tones, along with the subtle use of texture and pattern, create a gentle backdrop against which you can appreciate the smaller details in the home. Admire a display of acquired teacups in the armoire in the lounge, or pause in the dining area as the eye is drawn to the art piece above the server.

It’s these personalised touches, along with intelligent coordination and practical comfort that have made this home an elegant haven.
