When tablets and TV started to take over family time, these home owners decided that a change was in order. “The main aim for us, when building this home, was to create an environment where playing outside and interacting with friends was not only possible, but fun.”

The husband-and-wife team embarked on the project together, opting for a farm-style home that embraced light and open spaces, and offered no barriers to the natural surroundings right on their doorstep.

The main bedroom in this four-bedroom home features an open-plan lounge area with fireplace, where the family gather for a quiet evening together. But the kids have free reign over the rest of the house. “The social area of the house is all open-plan, as we wanted a flow between the lounge, kitchen, dining room and TV room. There is a separate study, which doubles as a homework and art room for the children, although dad thought this room would be his domain.”

But despite all of this space and the options available, the patio is the family’s favourite space in the home, and is already filled with memories of fun times with family and friends.

The decor of the home reflects the family’s sense of fun and was largely inspired by local designers. Natural, hardy finishes such as slate floors, timber doors and window frames, and exposed facebrick sit happily alongside bright fabrics featuring local insignia such as proteas, gemsbok and the South African Coat of Arms.

One of the family’s best memories of moving into their new home was putting up the house number together on the night before they moved in. “When you are as involved as we chose to be in the design and building of the house, there is definitely a feeling of pride and a sense of achievement when walking into the finished home,” they explain.
