Green Living Kitchens

Gone Green

By Rami Moorosi

There are various ways to include the kitchen in the pursuit of more environmentally-friendly homes without sacrificing efficiency.

Appliances

Using highly effective appliances can significantly decrease energy consumption. Experts from Kitchen Clinic go on to suggest the use of hydro boil taps to boil water instead of kettles as this provides hot water immediately, as just one example of how appliances can help. When purchasing new appliances be on the lookout for Energy Star-rated models. This is an energy efficiency label that indicates a product’s energy performance, with A+ being the most efficient.

Lighting

According to experts from Eurolux: “Lighting is one of the easiest ways to start converting your kitchen to a green kitchen.” They go on to add that energy-saving light bulbs are available in most types of lamp shapes. These are great as you can save up to 80% on your lighting bill.

Cooking

You can opt for convection ovens and induction stovetops, which use less energy to get hot. Other ways include covering pots completely when cooking as this saves energy. Use a pressure cooker when cooking foods that require some time, for example pot roasts and stews. When possible, try to buy produce from your area as this reduces your carbon footprint. Other ways include defrosting food in the fridge instead of microwave and also using the microwave for small to medium portions – cook large quantities of meat, for example, in a conventional oven.

Cleaning

Try natural alternatives for cleaning such as baking soda and vinegar to clean and choosing nature-friendly cleaning products bought in bulk and concentrated form. In terms of kitchen towels and cloths, rather go for washable and reusable ones instead of disposable paper towels.

Last note

Don’t forget to recycle. You can even take this as far as composting. According to Greenpeace this fights global warming by helping keep organic waste out of landfills where it produces methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas.
