Off great foundations

When choosing the perfect site for your dream home, there are many things to consider. But for this particular family, settling on a plot was determined following an afternoon visit to the site. With a glass of wine in hand, the owners were able to see their future selves settled and happy within this sought-after golf estate, situated on the outskirts of Durban.

And on embarking on the groundworks, the owners, who are passionate about their wine, buried a bottle of champagne in the foundations, a sentimental touch that has obviously brought nothing but positivity to this beautiful home.

Due to the steepness of the site, they had no choice but to go with a double-storey build. The upside of this is uninterrupted views over the golf course.

With a less conventional layout, you enter the house on the top level, alongside the bedrooms. “We opted for this type of layout in order to maximise the ground floor, where we have open-plan living areas and where we spend our time entertaining.”

And built for entertaining it is! The kitchen acts as the heart, a timeless design complemented by an oak butcher-block style worktop and striking blue tiled splashback. The fresh, pale grey of the walls blends with the greyed-oak vinyl floor, providing a soothing backdrop that has an almost Scandinavian air. The afternoon sun brings with it extra light, lifting spirits after a day’s work and setting the scene for valuable family time. Having a one-year-old and a four-year-old has had somewhat of an influence on the interior design. “We selected uncomplicated finishes that were kid friendly,” the owner says.

This has by no means compromised the final outcome; the whole house has a wonderfully stylish edge, modern but with an element of fun, which has brought character to the property.
