GUILD Design Fair 2015

Written by Janine Jorgensen

After such a success last year, the GUILD Design Fair returns to The Lookout at the V & A Waterfront from 25 February – 1 March.

GUILD founders Julian and Trevyn McGowan have a vision to bring South African design to the rest of the world and every exhibitor, whether local or international, has a deep and relevant connection to this country.

One of the most exciting collaborations is between the American designers Haas Brothers and the non-profit income-generating bead project Monkeybiz, who with their partner Afreaks have used traditional craft in a new and funky way. Other collaborations include Studio Molen and Swazi weavers Gone Rural who have produced a conceptual piece inspired by the darkness of the African sky at night, and Peter Mabeo and Porky Hefer, who have combined their craftmanship of carpentry and weaving respectively.

Helen Chislett, a respected UK art journalist, has also brought out with her a few of her favourite design pieces from London Connoisseur, such as a sculpted bench by Thomas Heatherwick (he of London Olympics flame fame) and the elegant Dune series by up and coming designers Studio Swine.

With much more to see, the fair is a chance to appreciate amazing talent and groundbreaking design – and the beautiful setting beside the ocean won’t disappoint either.
