Set in the midst of lush, green lawn on the Waterfall Equestrian Estate in Johannesburg is a home that does not fight for attention, but gets it nevertheless.

The unassuming exterior of the home combines traditional aesthetics with modern building techniques and materials to create an inviting first impression. The pitched roof and manicured garden at the front of the home have the mark of Cape Dutch winelands in the heart of Johannesburg.

The interior of the home speaks a different language, one that embraces a wide range of influences to create something unique, contemporary and unforgettable. Oversized features have been carefully selected to highlight certain areas of the home. From the double wooden front door to the mushroom-shaped lamp, huge faceted mirror and oversized beaded chandelier in the hallway – these special touches make the home memorable.

The clean lines of the entrance give way to an open-plan living area that combines both Zen elements – in the form of a wooden, blocked room divider – and a ’70s-style bookshelf. Although seemingly juxtaposed, these components work together to create a truly sophisticated living area that could just as easily accommodate a soirée as it could a games evening with the kids.

But the true highlight of this home is the magnificent view, framed by expansive glass folding doors. With so much light and glass, an unobtrusive window covering treatment was essential, and the home owners opted for roller blinds that would shield their furniture from sun damage, while keeping the interiors of the home cool, and allowing privacy from the outside, but interrupted views from the inside.

The glass doors lead to a sprawling garden punctuated by cosy seating, and a pristine pool that rounds off the relaxed nature of the home.
