What to look for in a fitness tracker

Written by Tiana Cline

When it comes to counting calories, kilometres, steps and more, a fitness tracker is the way to go. But, like any popular gadget, there are many brands and features to consider, never mind what the device looks and feels like… or if it connects to Discovery Vitality or Momentum Multiply so you can earn points.

From Jawbone to Garmin, Polar and Fitbit, whether you’re at the gym or cycling, it’s important to choose the right wearable for you. While Garmin makes a number of trackers with specific sports in mind – great if you’re into golf or swimming, for example – many of the best brands don’t measure your heart rate, which means you might also want to invest in a heart-rate monitor later on.

Another question is watch or band, and then if you’re up to recharging your device more regularly or if you’re in need of something that can sleekly track your sleeping patterns (and wake you up with a silent alarm, at the right time).

Right now, one of the best wearables on the market is the fuss-free Fitbit Alta HR. It’s thin and light, looks trendy (which means you won’t mind wearing it) and can track all your activity, sleep and exercise. It also displays phone notifications – think calls, text messages and calendar entries – on its OLED screen, and sends you customisable reminders during the day to get up and move, ideal if you’re stuck behind a desk all day.

What makes the Fitbit Alta HR so easy to use is that, even though you can use the Fitbit app to manually log your calorie intake, water consumption and weight, most of the tracking is done behind the scenes. Running a race or just running after the kids? Every step counts.

Another nice detail of the Fitbit Alta HR is that you can buy additional straps. So, if you’d like a wearable that looks more like a bracelet than a silicone band, that’s doable. Overall, the Fitbit Alta HR is very good at what it does, without being bulky or overly complicated. And with a week’s battery life, you’ll be getting the best, all-rounder wearable for now.
