Domotex: 2012 Hanover – the biggest worldwide flooring trade show has recently taken place – outlining the 2012 flooring trends that will see individual identity foremost on the decor front.

With a total of around 45 000 visitors that attended the show, the exhibition has been hailed as a huge success. This year’s trends appear to be focused on individualisation and custom designs. “Whereas previously, carpets and floor coverings were only expected to be practical and easy to clean, these once-utilitarian items have now advanced to becoming unique objects d’art, which makes a statement of their own.”

“The trend towards handmade carpets and rugs directly reflects the aspirations of today’s consumers towards residential environments that express their own unique personality. The fair provided ample opportunity for admiring the most imaginative and creative designs currently on the market, as showcased in the Carpet Design Awards and at the Souk Deluxe trends show.”

The three major trends outlined for the year ahead included:

  • Fashionable: stylish and eye-catching carpets – bold colours, high-quality materials, quirky designs.
  • Natural: the new organic look – green products remains en vogue.
  • Classic: timeless design with a new twist – traditional patterns combined with bold colours.

Personally, I can’t wait to see what the South African flooring trends produce this year. One thing is for sure though, there’s a whole lot of exclusivity on the market now – making each design as unique as its owner.
