Modern simplicity

When choosing the estate, the owners of this home were completely sold by the lifestyle that would accompany life there.

The thought of having running tracks on the premises, a school at their doorstep, and a stand overlooking a serene greenbelt with dams and wildlife was simply too good to pass up. Add to that the level of security at the estate, and it really was a no-brainer.

The house itself is a family home, designed to feel warm and cater to both the parents’ sense of style, which leans towards a modern theme with plenty of raw wood pieces and draped curtains, and the children’s personalities, which are exemplified by elements like a racecar bed and a One Direction themed wall. “It had to be a home that we could grow in, with the kids. This led us to create many different fun spaces around the house,” say the home owners.

Looking at the decor, it appears that “less is more” is an adage the owners subscribe to. Against a backdrop of mostly whites, browns and greys, they added subtle touches of colour that accent various decor items. In the living space, for example, the colour scheme is broken and simultaneously accentuated by a lighting fixture that may otherwise have gone unnoticed. They didn’t use an interior designer, relying rather on their natural eye for design, finding items that worked well together.

“Furnishing and decorating the house was exciting… we really surprised ourselves with the outcome of each room. We got a great sense of satisfaction once we completed a room, as it always came together so well,” they say.

When asked about the room that appealed to them most, the lady of the house speaks enthusiastically about the kitchen, but conceded that the rest of her family may be inclined to disagree.

“My husband and kids would say it is the cinema room. For me, the kitchen is where I zone out and enjoy my baking and creating meals for the family…it is where we all always come together to either lend a hand with the meals, be a taster or just chat. With the doors open and a view over the greenbelt while cooking, it’s such a refreshing feel to a very warm kitchen.

“The cinema room is a space to play, to build Lego, to dance, to sing, and of course to watch a great movie,” she says. “On those grounds, we’re just going to call it a tie.”

The master bedroom continues the running theme of achieving elegance and class through simplicity. Its open-plan bathroom design makes it more spacious – like a home within the home, with two occasional chairs sitting neatly in a designated reading (or relaxing) corner, and a slick flat-screen TV which disappears into the TV stand, turning it into a decorative cabinet.

Filled with a great sense of excitement and accomplishment, the home owners say they could not wait to move into their new home, which once seemed a far-fetched idea, but was now a reality.
