New Halsted Collection

Written by Janine Jorgensen

Next week is Design Indaba’s annual festival in Cape Town, showcasing creative talent from around the world.

Launching at the expo is Halsted’s new range of tableware products inspired by, and capturing the playfulness of, Ardmore Ceramic Art’s African fauna and flora.

Key elements in the collection are the mischievous vervet monkey as well as the intricately patterned leopard, an animal that is synonymous with royalty in Zulu culture. The new range also takes inspiration from the Zulu amazumpa circles (a feature in traditional Zulu pottery), which are symbolic of the eggs or cells of life.

The 2015 Halsted Collection has been designed by Catherine Berning, the daughter of Halsted co-founder and Ardmore Ceramic Art founder, Fée Halsted, who says: “It wasn’t easy because the Ardmore pieces are so different, extravagant and beautiful. But, working with other members of the team, I was able to create a Halsted range that is filled with wit, humour and Ardmore’s signature African rooted imagery.”
