Nour, shining with light

Written by Jess Binns

It’s the start of a fresh new year and I’m already brimming with interior inspiration! To welcome in 2017, I want to share with you a new design gem by interiors firm DS17. Lebanese restaurant Nour – a powerhouse of pastel tones against a backdrop of polished concrete and decorative steel-framed glazing – can be found in Sydney’s popular district of Surry Hills.

Wanting to give Lebanese cuisine a makeover of sorts, the owners looked to the interior to echo this reinvention. Delicate blush and apricot tones used for the soft furnishing speak of light, textural qualities within the menu, whereas rich wood panelling and timeless marble echo favourite classic staples.

As nour means “the light” in Arabic, it’s fitting that you are met with fresh white walls, clear glass lighting and reflective floors. A circular theme has been introduced through mirrors, wall hangings and outdoor wall planters. The use of circles brings a simplistic beauty to the space. There’s nothing complicated here; perhaps that’s another similarity to the food they serve.

What is becoming clear is that our immediate surroundings are, more and more, dictating our culinary experiences. This is by no means a negative; I think the appreciation of design and food can, and should, sit happily as one.

Best wishes,

Jess from Hector and Bailey
