One on one with Petro Vivier

If you’re a fan of Scandi design, look no further than Mono Online Shop. Started by Petro Vivier, Mono will soon become your first port of call for Scandi-inspired furniture, fabrics and decor accessories. We spoke to Petro about what inspired her to start Mono.

Tell us a bit about yourself and why you started monoshop.co.za.

I am 22 years old with a passion for art, design and all things beautiful. A couple of years ago I discovered Scandinavian interiors for the first time and just fell in love with it. At the time, our family was in the process of relocating to Cape Town, where we found an old house with amazing potential for a complete renovation. We decided to go with this newly discovered style (i.e. white walls, white floors and minimalist décor). When we couldn’t find exactly the kind of décor we wanted, I started coming up with some designs (including scatter cushions, prints, home office accessories etc, all of which can now be found in our store). The idea only evolved into a business when we realised that other people might also appreciate our Scandinavian-inspired look and unique designs.

What type of products do you stock on monoshop.co.za?

We stock products that are either designed and made by us, or sourced from local suppliers (and preferably handmade). Every new product we design or source has to fit into our monochrome Scandinavian-inspired look (and of course our home, where all our photos are taken). For this reason, we call ourselves a concept store.

Why monochrome?

Apart from it being a trend right now, I just love designing in black and white and can’t get enough of the monochrome look. It is something that I find works so well with Scandinavian-style interiors and makes for really interesting designs.

Describe your design process.

I draw inspiration from images I see on Pinterest and any overseas products/stores that are of interest to me. I use this inspiration to design new products. I try to collect as many ideas as possible (either by writing them down or saving the images), so that I have a list of product ideas whenever I need some inspiration for new designs. The process is fairly simple, as I only have to create products that fit into our look.

Any exciting projects you are currently working on?

Currently all my attention is focused on the store and constantly developing new products (a project in itself). We are planning to add a whole lot of new products to the Kids’ Collection, as well as some more industrial-style pieces (among other things) to the rest of our collections.
