One on one with Reclaim Design

Written by Shereen Lurie

Reclaim Design is a small Cape Town based business that makes home decor and garden items from recycled materials. We spoke to it’s co-owner Michael Martin.

Tell us a bit about yourself and why you started Reclaim Design.

My partner Nikki and I started Reclaim Design late last year after returning from 6 months of travelling through India. We felt that we needed a change (she was a photographer and I was a music producer) and wanted to do something that reflected and involved our love of reducing, reusing, recycling, upcycling and growing our own food. So we came up with a range of pots, planters and other beautiful things that we think achieves this.

What type of products do you stock on Reclaim Design?

Currently we have a range of reclaimed wood vertical gardens, planters, succulent gardens, terrariums, tealight candle holders, upcycled light bulb vases with reclaimed wood stand and recycled yoghurt pots covered with fabric decoupage.

Describe your design process.

Invariably this starts with coffee. Nikki and I discuss what we think might work, draw some dodgy sketches on a serviette and then head home to manifest it. Nothing complicated. We like to keep our lives simple.

Any exciting projects you are currently working on?

We have a few things in the pipeline, but not 100% confirmed yet, so we’ll see what happens.

Your favourite Reclaim Design product/s?

I suppose it would be a bit obvious to say all of them, so I’ll pick Nikki’s fabric decoupage pots. I think they are beautifully made, versatile and a great addition to any window sill.
