How To

Patio furniture protection

Spending less time outside during winter can mean that outdoor furniture gets less TLC than usual. Here’s how to ensure it is protected from the elements during the colder months.

Invest in quality furniture

Alon Sachs, co-owner of Mobelli Furniture + Living, believes that outdoor furniture should be ready for use whenever you want to use it. “Your outdoor furniture should be as easy as possible to maintain in winter so you can take advantage of warm weather days without having to remove furniture covers and replace cushions that have been stored.”

Sachs adds: “This is why when we bring in outdoor furniture we ensure it is suitable for the South African climate, can withstand the hot summers in terms of UV resistance, but also with features that help withstand the cool and wet days. All our outdoor cushions are made from high-quality acrylic and high-density quick-drying foam so you can leave them outside in any weather. Many of them also feature clever drainage systems so any rain can drain away quickly, so they are ready for use shortly after a downpour. All Mobelli outdoor furniture is designed and made to be used all year round, without all the hassle of maintenance.”

Nourish wooden furniture

Once you’ve invested in outdoor wooden furniture, you’ll want to ensure it last for several years. Woodoc MD Frikkie Greeff advises you keep your outdoor furniture in tip top condition during winter by applying Woodoc’s Deep Penetrating Weatherproof Wax as a maintenance treatment. “Woodoc Deep Penetrating Weatherproof Wax will penetrate the wood to clean, feed and rejuvenate, no matter if you live in the dry Highveld or in the wet Western Cape, or anywhere in between.”

Care, cover and store

MØN Exteriors e-commerce and digital marketing manager Kirstyn Verbaan’s top tip to keep outdoor furniture protected during the winter months is to care, cover and store. “The type of materials from which your outdoor furniture is made will dictate how much care needs to be taken during the colder months when low temperatures and wet weather arrive.”

Verbaan emphasises that when furniture is not in use for extended periods, or during inclement weather, be sure to cover it with high-quality, all-weather covers, and don’t allow cushion inners to become soaked. “It is also important to remember that if you are putting your patio furniture and accessories into storage during the winter months, these items are stored in a clean, cool, well-ventilated garage or shed.”
