Scandinavian inspired furniture is becoming a leading South African design trend. This is partly on account of us growing accustomed to smaller living spaces, requiring minimalist furniture to open these spaces up. This can also be attributed in part to a global shift towards less ostentatious,  and more organic looking decor.

Arising in the 1950s, the availability of low-cost materials and production methods, led Scandinavian furniture to be manufactured from woods such as pine, beech and ash. The inclusion of chrome and steel reinforce the designs’ ethos of simplicity and functionality. The colour palette is neutral with occasional ‘pops’ of colour to add interest to the room.

Two top local stores for Scandinavian inspired furniture are, ‘Space for Life Art & Design’ and ‘Dokter & Misses’. The former of which refurbishes and reupholsters Scandinavian designed furniture and also supports local craftsmen by combining their styles to create unique pieces. The latter embodies minimalism with quirky, attention-grabbing pieces such as their tables with rock bases sourced from the Magaliesburg, and cleverly cut and pieced together plywood furniture.

Are you a fan of Scandinavian inspired furniture?
