Should you switch?

Written by Tiana Cline

If you’re in the market for a new gaming gadget, Nintendo’s hybrid gaming console, the Nintendo Switch, is finally available. And while you won’t be able to use it as a home entertainment centre (like an Xbox or Sony PlayStation), it does have some brilliant features that will suit those looking for fun and also some flexibility.

How so? The Nintendo Switch transforms from a TV-connected gaming console into a portable handheld (like a tablet, really) in a second, and seamlessly. The battery life is around three to six hours, depending on the game being played.

Aesthetically, it’s smaller than expected, with a slick-looking, black docking station and console which, by adding the side controllers, comes together in an instant. It’s light, easy to use and doesn’t take up too much space. What’s more, the Switch has brilliant parental controls – it links to an app that parents can use to easily monitor what kids are playing and for how long.

The Nintendo Switch also manages to fulfil whatever you’re looking for in a gaming console by being completely different from anything else out there, and also by offering a number of games to suit every preference (which you can download directly from the Nintendo eShop, or you can buy the cartridge version).

Looking for a long-lasting adventure you can play solo? Try The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or I am Setsuna. Want mini-games you can play with your friends and family, and just have a laugh together? There’s both 1-2-Switch and Snipperclips – Cut it out, together! 1-2-Switch is what Nintendo calls a party game, and we can understand why – it’s really that much fun. It includes 28 different mini-games that you play with two or more players. And because the Nintendo Switch is portable, 1-2-Switch is a game you can easily take with you to your family one Sunday afternoon. It’s as easy to pack as a board game.

Lastly, those nostalgic for Nintendo can look forward to both Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey coming later in the year, along with many more other games.

The Nintendo Switch is modern yet retro, eccentric yet technologically advanced. And more importantly, it’s a great addition if you’re looking for entertainment the entire family can enjoy.
