A taste of the tropics

Written by Shereen Lurie

For quite some time we’ve seen jungle prints popping up in the homes of the design set. From exotic palm fronds, ferns and bougainvillea to brightly coloured parrots and sleek jaguars, the tropical home décor trend can be seen on wallpaper, bed linen, quirky home accessories and everything in-between.

We love this trend as it adds a modern and fresh look to any space. Depending on your taste you can go for a less risqué version like the classic banana leaf print or something bolder like a psychedelic Garden of Eden setting (think the coveted Qalakabusha Sofa by Halsted).

Here are a few of our favourites:

The Qalakabusha fabric range by Halsted has a collection of distinctly African prints in an assortment of vivid colours.

Giant wildflowers adorn the Astrid Chair by L.A. based designer Porridge.

The clintonfriedman label at Robin Sprong “has a natural curiosity toward the delicacy, strength, and complexity found in both the natural and the man-made worlds.”

Soil Design’s Pineapple wallpaper, available at Robin Sprong, has a sophisticated and trendy pattern.

We love the oil painting look of Gralan Fabric’s Ginger Tea print from their Paradise Collection. The range includes oversized foliage, casual watercolour stripes and colourful birds.

The Paradise Found Rug at Anthropologie, by artist Shelley Hesse, is packed with colorful waterbirds and exquisite oversized flora. Anthropologie products can be imported to South Africa.
