Terrific transformation

Written by Jess Binns

It’s no secret that I’m very fond of old buildings. I’m drawn to places that display vulnerability due to years of wear and tear. Many are neglected, left to fend for themselves against the elements and the passing of time, yet still they stand proud, leaving us to guess at their past.

Beauty really can be found in decay, and there’s no better example of this than in this series of dilapidated stone buildings, situated in Champoton, Mexico. Taken on by AS Arquitectura, a local firm of architects, the aging structures now provide the backbone to a new hotel resort and wedding venue.

Rather than repair and renovate the stone walls, AS Arquitectura celebrate the ruins by working around and within them, allowing the rawness to take centre stage. Contemporary finishes blend with ancient tree roots and moss-covered walls, giving an air of fantasy. You are cleverly led from space to space via timber plank pathways and bamboo pergolas. These simplistic additions sit subservient to the historic qualities on site.

Nothing about this resort is loud or brash. It feels like the perfect setting for a wedding or special event. These walls have surely witnessed many such occasions over the years.

Best wishes,
