We Work Offices in Shanghai

Written by Jess Binns

As I write this on a rare cold and rainy day in Durban, my spirits can’t help but be lifted by the fun and colourful design of the recently completed We Work Offices in Shanghai, exquisitely handled by architectural duo Line House. These super-talented ladies have transformed a giant 5 500m2 former opium factory into a grownups’ paradise playground.

Situated in an historical district of the city, the industrial structure has been reincarnated with colour at the core of its new identity. The impressive atrium space has been enhanced with an ingenious lighting installation that suspends over the entire void. The original staircases have been treated to a pea-green base, toned down with ply cladding. The balustrade has a variety of blue and green tones painted on just one face, which results in a delightful ombre effect.

The attention to detail on this project is second to none; every square metre has its own vibrant, bespoke touch, which Line House is fast becoming known for.

Once again, this is a perfect marriage of old and new. Happily, the building’s historic integrity remains intact, while woven together with a modern style.

Best wishes,

Jess from Hector and Bailey
