When to splurge and when to save

Moving into your first home and finding yourself short on décor essentials to make it a home is very frustrating. That’s even more true if your budget is limited and you can’t afford everything you need or want. You then should decide what you can and can’t live without.

However – if you know which items you can spend more on and on which items you can afford to skimp, you might find that you can afford everything you desire for your home.

In the lounge

When furnishing your lounge, you want to get good quality, sturdy couches and chairs. We spend a lot of time in this room, so you want furniture that can withstand a lot of wear and tear. If you have animals, your safest bet will be leather furniture.

Television stands, on the other hand, don’t take a lot of knocks. This means you don’t have to buy it new. You can pick up decent used ones from a second-hand shop. If you can’t find a proper stand, buy a quirky table. It will work just as well.

In the kitchen

You definitely want to invest in superior kitchen appliances. These don’t come cheap, but it’ll be even more expensive if you have to replace shoddy ones on a regular basis. You’ll also save yourself a lot of time, effort and frustration in the kitchen. When you find it becoming an expensive exercise, look for appliances that perform more than once function.

You don’t need to spend your money on expensive dinnerware just yet. Buy plates, cutlery and glassware individually from cheaper stores and splurge on complete sets once you have the money available. You might even find that you like the mix and match look more.

In the bedroom

You will spend at least 8 hours of every day in your bed, so you want to spend money on it. That means a hard-wearing base or frame set, an orthopaedic mattress, down fillers, and beautiful bedding. Think percale cotton; think high thread count. Two sets of bedding should be good to start with, you can always add to your collection after your initial buy.

Nightstands don’t need to get a lot of your décor budget. They’re mostly hidden under lamps, books and trinkets. In fact, you might not even need nightstands if you have other shelves and display space in your bedroom. If that’s the case, just get standing lamps for next to your bed when you want to read.

In the bathroom

The one and only luxury item you need to splurge on in the bathroom is a good set of towels. Fluffy cotton towels will look great and be an enormous treat. Embroidered towels aren’t for everyone, but they will add a unique touch to your bathroom.

Still short on money to get exactly what you want? Then we recommend you deal with your home room by room. Start with the rooms you use most often and then work towards decorating other rooms. Don’t lose patience – your house will eventually come together beautifully.
