The World’s Smallest Garden

Green tech is having a moment. From apps to gadgets, it’s becoming easier for amateurs to get into urban farming.

The farm-to-table movement, which is all about using fresh local produce where possible, is something you can get into at home, with your own veggie garden. But what if you don’t have space for a garden? Or live in an apartment?

Meet The World’s Smallest Garden. (And this isn’t farm-to-table; it’s table-to-table!) Originally crowdfunded on Kickstarter, it’s a really interesting (yet simple) concept which means that, even if you don’t have the space for a garden, you can use herbs and vegetables you’ve grown yourself.

Using a bottle of your own (the company encourages upcycling, so think old olive oil or wine bottles), The World’s Smallest Garden is a super-smart, self-watering hydroponic garden. You begin with a small cylindrical device that is placed in the spout. It contains smart soil that uses a capillary action to lift water up to the (non-GMO) seeds. As the seedling sprouts, it sends roots down into the base of the bottle.

This clever system also means that growing plants can water themselves. You’ll need to top up only after the first month – perfect if you’re the sort of person who can’t keep house plants alive.

From basil to bok choi, catnip, lettuce and parsley, the variety of seedlings is exciting. What’s also interesting is that you can reuse the inserts, depending on how long you let the plant grow and the type of plant you’re growing. If the roots are small, the chances of reusing it are higher.
