How To

5 easy ideas for cosy winter nights-in

1. Share a special red with your BFF

Why not splurge on a really special bottle of red wine (the award-winning, gold star type that you would normally overlook)? And share it with your best friend on the carpet in front of a crackling fire…or even over the kitchen table with a few candles thrown in. In the greater scheme of things this is a really easy, but quite special way to treat a special someone – especially if you have a Red-Thai butternut soup bubbling away.

2. Curl up with your favourite author

What bibliophile can resist the pull of warm woolly socks, a cup of hot chocolate and finding yourself in a make-believe world where frenemies get their comeuppance and children belong to someone else. Or get in your favourite décor & home magazine and start making those wish lists.

3. Make your fireplace fantasies a reality

Do you go (an attractive shade of) teal with envy every time you watch a European home décor show with its plentiful original-feature fireplaces and the justified luxury of a northern winter goose down comforter in your bedroom – complete with said fireplace, of course…

Having your own fireplace is not an impossible dream. All you need is to decide whether your home is better suited to:

• A wood or gas fire
• Built-in or freestanding
• Vintage, modern or classic

This depends on a variety of factors, including the ventilation within your house (wood fires and stoves only work in well ventilated areas, while gas fires are economical with no soot, ash, smoke or mess), the functionality of your space (the use of vent free fireplaces in bedrooms and bathrooms is not allowed) and of course your individual style.

4. Get out your board games

Watching TV is so early 2000’s. With family-time values becoming increasingly prevalent, winter is the very best time to convince your kids to spend the night in with the oldies. Getting them away from WhatsApp might be a bit trickier. Yet even self-important teenagers might enjoy the opportunity to find out who killed Colonel Mustard with a golf club in the ballroom. Ok, it’s worth a try anyway.

5. Keep the Home Fires burning

However you choose to spend your evenings this winter, make sure your home is cosy and comfortable. From choosing a few new accessories in deep, lustrous yellow-gold and soft winter white (this winter’s home-fashion colours), to treating yourself to a trendy Alpine fireplace in your kitchen/dining area, be sure to bask in the warmth of your own home. For bespoke advice, visit a Home Fires showroom to talk to one of their specialists or visit their website on Homefires.co.za.
