A family affair

With family a main priority, the home was aptly designed and created by Nico van der Meulen Architects and decorated and finished by the family’s other businesses. While Nico and Werner, the middle son, work on the architectural side of the business, his wife Santa, and eldest son Rudolph, head up its affiliate furniture company, M Square Lifestyle Necessities. The interior design section of the business, M Square Lifestyle Design, is run by Rudolph’s wife, Phia.

Standing proud as a testament to the ever popular classic-modernist design, the house was designed for sheer comfort and easy living.

Rudolph van der Meulen explains that the brief was “to create a stylish family home with ecologically sound design that maximised on indoor-outdoor living, taking full advantage of Johannesburg’s legendary eight-month summers. It is a double-storey home with open-plan living area downstairs, an upstairs pyjama lounge, and four bedrooms, all of them en suite. The three family bedrooms are upstairs, with the guest room downstairs, separating it from the family’s sleeping area in order to maximise on their privacy”.
