Ever heard of the saying: “The devil is in the detail”? Well, nowhere is this more apt than when it comes to choosing your bathroom accessories, as it is this choice that can really set a bathroom composition apart from the rest. Sandy Turner offers some insight into how to go about choosing the best accessories for your bathroom.

Choosing a style

The first thing that needs to be done is to select the style of your bathroom accessories. Says Sandy: “Of course, it is essential that your bathroom accessories complement and even accentuate the overall style of your bathroom. Bathroom Bizarre offers a selection of different ranges that boast a wide number of matching bathroom accessories in a particular style for maximum impact – including towel rails, soap dispensers, shower caddies, bathroom bins, practical mini shelves, and so on.”

There are many different ranges to choose from and something to match practically any bathroom style you can conceive of – for example, if your bathroom is of a contemporary style, then sleek chrome accessories with simple design lines would be best. However, if your bathroom boasts a more old world feel, then choosing hand-curled metalwork fittings, such as Bathroom Bizarre’s Poseidon range, is a better choice. Chrome fittings in more conventional shapes fit the bill for more traditional bathroom styles.

Materials for accessories

Since the bathroom can get very moist and humid, it is essential that any bathroom accessories you select are made from materials that will withstand these harsh conditions. As such, the most popular choice of material is treated metal and glass, says Sandy: “Being rust-poof, these two materials offer maximum durability in wet and moist conditions, they are practical non-porous surfaces to deal with making them a hygienic material that is easy to clean, and aesthetically, they can be fashioned to complement a number of different bathroom styles. Traditionally, wood has been popular, but be warned – although it looks very attractive, wood will eventually warp, swell and crack in a typical bathroom environment.”

Choosing and placing your accessories

When choosing which accessories to include, Sandy advises caution on the side of practicality: “Be sure not to include too many accessories in your bathroom space, as this could make it look cluttered and untidy. Rather, think about what you need and choose functional and practical accessories accordingly. Buy a few useful items and choose the best you can afford – this will not only save you money in the long run, but it will also lead to a more streamlined and aesthetically pleasing overall look.”

For example, she suggests that instead of buying towel rails and a heated towel rail – rather choose one or the other: “Heated towel rails are an ideal bathroom accessory, which will warm up your towels and greatly enhance your overall bathroom experience. Although you will most likely require mini towel rails for your hand towels near to the basin, if you have a heated towel rail installed in your bathroom, it is unlikely that you will need ordinary towel rails as well.”

The placement of your accessories is another very important consideration, explains Sandy: “Time should be spent to carefully determine where various bathroom accessories would be best placed for maximum functionality. For example – it is no use placing the toilet roll holder behind the toilet so that it is really uncomfortable to reach for. It is highly advisable to actually take time out to test where the most convenient and practical location for the various accessories would be. Remember, that often when you hang these accessories up, you will be drilling through tiles. As such it is essential that you get the placement right before you do any drilling, otherwise, if you want to move them afterwards, there will be ugly holes drilled through the tiles that you will need to deal with.”

Bathroom accessory trends

When it comes to bathroom accessories, the design focus now is on form meeting function says Sandy: “In other words, when it comes to investing in accessories for the bathroom, increasingly more homeowners are looking for products that not only look good, but ones that serve a practical function as well. These items need to offer a matching aesthetic that complements the overall theme of the bathroom, with the focus being on the less-is-more ethos – so streamlined good looks, with an added touch of glamour, is currently very desirable.

She says that items that are fast gaining popularity and becoming a must-have in any well accessorised bathroom include free-standing shower seats for added comfort, elegant wall-mounted soap dispensers, heated towel rails, extendable bath racks that sit over the foot of a free-standing bath, matching toilet brush and bins, shower caddies and glass shelving for added storage.”
