Situated in Pilanesberg Game Reserve, just north of Rustenburg and only two hours drive from Johannesburg, Shepherd’s Tree Lodge is an exclusive game lodge that allows its guests to be at peace with nature. This is an area that is blessed with unique landscapes, adorned by large volcanic complexes, and rare rock types and structures that have resulted in distinctive geological features.
The lodge has 32 rooms that all enjoy the beauty of a valley in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. It is positioned at the foot of a mountain and follows its contours with north-facing views over the valley. With a location of this nature, it is no wonder that one of the highlight features of this remarkable lodge is without a doubt its breathtaking and picturesque views.
The architectural style of the lodge takes its inspiration from the natural surrounds. Architect Llewellyn Cronje of CA Architects explains that the design concept was to “engage with the bush as far as possible and to allow the bush to dominate. The complex was fragmented and split into separate buildings and spaces in order to steer away from one large building and create a series of smaller units and areas to allow the bush to spread between”.
The thinking behind this was to create a structure that would merge with the environment instead of intruding onto it.
As the bush continues to grow, the building will merge and almost disappear, camouflaged in the bushveld. Llewellyn adds: “A deliberate decision was made to use steel sheeting as a roof material to negate the threat of fire. This allowed for the use of large open spaces and a relatively low profile, which nestles well in the environment. The room structures were built as simply as possible using conventional materials and painted to merge with the bush.”
The end result was simple unpretentious exteriors but interiors that are completely luxurious.
For the main lodge area, large timber decks and walkways connect the different spaces to merge seamlessly with nature. The numerous spaces have been elevated to look over the valley and provide secure game viewing pleasure.
Adding to the luxurious experience of Shepherd’s Tree Lodge is a gourmet restaurant and outdoor boma that serves delectable cuisine. Visitors can also enjoy a health and beauty spa, safari-related activities and much more, making a stay at this game lodge a must for anyone seeking a few days and nights spent in the harmony of nature.
