Autoban Design Studio

Written by Jess Binns

Turkish design studio, Autoban is globally gathering momentum since its conception in the nineties. Founders, Seyan Ozdemir and Sefer Caglar, first met whilst studying architecture and design at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. They now run a team of 35 architects and interior designers, and showcase a varied portfolio that covers their latest projects, which include hotel re-designs and the interior of Heydar Aliyev airport in Baku.

Approaching every project as storytellers is how this duo achieves their design goals for each client. “We begin by seeking to understand the context and characters. We tell these stories in materials, space and form, with the projects being rooted in the present, hinting at the future and referencing the past.”

To complement the design side of the business, Autoban set its hand to product design. By honing its designs through local artisans and craftsman mixed with new technologies, the results are very much as individual as the next. Autoban products can be found in a number of countries, boasting over 60 outlets.

With a number of design awards under its belt (Autoban won “Best Young Designers” by Wallpaper in 2004), I will be watching Autoban with great interest as the team spreads its wings further. I hear from the grapevine that they shall be tackling two London restaurants in the New Year. So watch this space!

Happy New Year!
