Bathtime reflection

By Justine Olivier

Mirrors create the illusion of enlarged space as well as aid in distributing light in dark areas thereby increasing the tranquil ambience.

Bathroom mirrors these days serve a multifunctional purpose: they are not only functional, but are also decorative. Mandy Lancellas, of Glass Art, points out that “mirrors create personalised artworks within a bathroom signifying a small piece of the overall style of the home”.

An array of options present themselves, allowing home owners to choose from the likes of table mirrors, to counter mirrors, scissor extension, wall-mounted, cabinets, vanities, magnifying, heated and free-standing mirrors, not forgetting shower mirrors.

Shaun Lewis, of Shower Planet, believes that the secret in terms of correct mirror choice lies in the finish: “If the mirror is worked off correctly then it will look good, for example you can have a beautifully beveled mirror in or out of a frame.” One of the recent trends is to hang a simple yet large horizontal mirror across the span of the entire wall, with or without a frame.

Heated mirrors not only enhance your bathroom, but also conveniently de-mist any possible moisture caused by steam, and also ensure that no unsightly streak marks are left upon its glass surface from the dripping condensation. Sandblasting, glazing and framing have become a more popular option nowadays. Shower Planet offers brilliantly cut designs in mirror giving it an individual look.
