I recently had some beautiful wooden blinds installed in my bedroom (replacing some rather worn and tatty vertical fabric blinds that were probably installed when the house was built a few decades ago), and after seeing the multiple effects that they have had on the room, I can’t believe I didn’t do it earlier!
Aside from the obvious aesthetic improvement, the privacy that they afford is hugely gratifying. I now have actual control over the amount of light that comes into the room – which is great if I want to have an afternoon snooze – and the blinds improve heat control in the room, as they create a form of insulation, or can be opened fully to allow a free flow of light and air. A further advantage is that they add value to a property. Due to the very decor-specific nature of fabric window dressings (which are not considered fixtures), shutters and blinds, which are, can be considered an investment that is rewarded when a property is valued and or sold.
In terms of colour scheme, I selected a very neutral pearl white, which is a super backdrop for various accent pieces that I have in the room – dark cherrywood furniture, beautiful bursts of red and hints of silver. The beauty of this is that I have 2 linen sets, which I interchange, so my colour scheme can change completely with minimal effort and cost.
There are a number of exceptional blind and shutter suppliers across SA, a number of which advertise in SA Home Owner. So if you are looking to boost the value of your home, or just add a truly lovely feature to a room, consider the benefits of blinds (or shutters).
