Bethan Gray

Written by Jess Binns

For every single successful retailer, there needs to be a talented, successful designer. It’s par for the course – a store is really only as good as its content; and as global consumers, we grow hungry for the most innovative designs to hit our lifestyle stores.

So what makes for a successful and fruitful combination? Collaboration, that’s what. “Colabs” are fast becoming the way forward within the homewares retail world. The secret is seeking out that “holy grail” designer who can deliver on all levels. This is where Bethan Gray fits the bill on all levels.

Winner of the “Best British Designer Award” for 2013, Bethan is hot, hot property right now. If you follow the design fairs, you should be familiar with Gray’s work – her latest piece launched at Maison & Objet a few weeks back. Taking inspiration from her Welsh roots and stepping further back in the family tree to the Far East, Bethan combines these cultures to produce her designs. And when you have a great, great grandmother who was a cabinetmaker, you can clearly see the genes at work! I cannot help but bow down to the design knowledge this force of creative nature holds. You only have to check out her CV of collaborations with the likes of Lapicida and Crate & Barrell to name a few.

If you have a moment or two, pop over to Bethan’s website. Each and every one of her designs deserves your attention.

Best wishes, Jess from Hector and Bailey
