Blinds in the home

Written by Janine Jorgensen

Choosing a window covering for your home can be a daunting decision. Here’s what to consider if you are thinking about installing blinds.

Why choose blinds

For contemporary homes, blinds are a modern and streamlined choice of window coverings. They are versatile when it comes to fabric, and take less space than curtains. What’s more they provide light control, insulation and privacy – and you can combine them with other window treatments.

Blind styles

Roller blinds are a big trend as they are aesthetically attractive and easy to operate. Other options include Roman shades, which are more detailed than roller blinds, as they concertina when the blind is opened, and Venetian blinds, which are durable, easy to install and keep clean. Motorised blinds are also popular, from battery-operated styles to high tech home automation systems.

Where should blinds be installed

Generally, blinds can be installed in most rooms in the house, but some styles are more suited to particular spaces. In the kitchen and bathroom, wood (ensure it’s damp-proof) and aluminium Venetian blinds are easy to clean and adjustable. For the bedroom, consider incorporating a transparent layer for daytime privacy and light control, and adding another blockout layer for nighttime. A roller blind in the living room is flexible to adapt to needs such as the amount of light, noise and heat in the space. In smaller areas, such entrance halls and guest bathrooms, take the opportunity to have fun and go for something dramatic, as they are not rooms in which you spend a lot of time.
