Doors

The last of the three pivot aluminium doors, which close up the containers arrived. I just love how they turned out and how they open onto the pool area. I also got a funky bubble chandelier that I just had to have! I wanted this hanging light so badly that I sold my Galaxy tablet to be able to get it. It makes for a great view when in the shower.

The wonders of fake lawn

We also got grass this week, glorious beautiful green grass. Can you believe it’s fake? What a wonderful feeling, knowing we never have to mow grass again.

We decided to go this route as we barely have any back garden, and the house itself is quite industrial. I think it frames the pool perfectly and gives you the idea that we have a larger garden.

Seeing as the house building is nearing the end, it’s time to start with the garden. Neither of us are “garden” people, and have no idea when it comes to the outdoor part. I know what I love, which is a very manicured/labour intensive garden but now to get that with minimal maintenance……hmm – I’m not sure it’s possible. We‘ve chatted to various garden pros and looked at various options and quotes and now just to decide.

I’m a firm believer in supplying lots of pictures of your likes and dislikes. That way the person giving the quote gets a pretty good idea of your personality, what you want and what you envision the end result to be.

All about flexibility…

Something which was part of the original house design brief was a vertical garden; we had the wall waterproofed when we did the roof. Honestly, it’s turned into a headache and we are not sure whether we should persist through or scrap the idea altogether. In general when it comes to building I think you have to be flexible, as some ideas work out perfectly while others don’t and you have to learn when to let them go.

Talking about being flexible, our bedroom cupboards have migrated to the kitchen; we’ve built extra shelves in them and I think they are going to be just perfect. They just did not seem right in the bedroom, as they were too big and bulky.

One of the under counter bar fridges we bought has been converted and now holds the kitchen sink. It’s unreal how those things are made, once you start grinding and cutting away. The whole top is made of thick wood under the steel so as soon as you start cutting, the wood catches alight. Eventually we figured out the best way is to remove the pop rivets, and then use a hammer and chisel to take out the wood top. Look at the pictures to see what we ended up with.

So, as you can tell,  it’s been a crazy week moving everything into the garage and part of the house. Luckily we had a weekend away planned in Cape Town for some much needed rest and relaxation. Join us again in a couple of weeks for more news on the home-front!

Watch out for Sacha’s next post on 27 March.
