Build it green – part 25

Tempers are a bit frayed in our household at the moment. The fact that I packed away the espresso set (which we have not used in six years) did not help. Not sure why dearest hubby suddenly had an urge for espresso. The real reason for the stress is that we are due to move in seven days and the house is far from ready.

The biggest problems are the bathrooms. The steel frames for the baths have not yet arrived, thus the tiling has not been finished, and the water not yet connected. The rest of the interior will be almost complete after installation of the cupboards and carpets.

Despite this, I did see quite a few changes this week. The outdoor tiling is almost complete. Once again I was impressed with our tile choice. The colours have really blended well, and Heaveness, who has done all the tiling, has been amazing. He has an eye for colour and pattern. We left him to decide on the final layout and it looks really super.

The solar system is in and operational. Now we do not have to rely on Eskom for our main power needs. I wonder what our neighbours are going to say when there is a black-out and we are the only ones in the street with lights on…

We were also encouraged to see the paint being applied outside. It looks a bit light, but after a couple of coats, I’m sure it will take on a more definite hue.

Jane Moseley and her garden team have been hard at work levelling the land and pulling weeds. The effect has been quite dramatic. The steps from the patio suddenly seem perfectly in proportion, and the deep gully in front of the house has disappeared.

On the outdoor front, our perimeter wall is going up too. Thanks to Tiaan, it is no ordinary brick and mortar wall either! This wall is another steel and concrete wonder: trenches were dug and concrete laid, and there the similarity ended. Upright steel rods were inserted into the concrete, which will become upright pillars. The guys are now assembling steel mesh into panels, and pillars. These will be erected, and then cemented into place with a type of concrete spray mixture. Sounds intriguing! Watch this space!

Our interior decorating has hit a snag. After setting our hearts on the most beautiful curtaining fabric, we were told that it has a back order of 2 months. We have tried to find a substitute, but nothing is matching up to the standard.  It is quite clear that we will be moving in without front curtains, so maybe we should wait until our material is back in stock?

So, another week down. I’m off to make instant coffee for my other half and attend to a few more boxes.
