Build it green – part 28

Written by admin

We keep on complimenting ourselves on our outdoor colour scheme. For a couple without a single interior decorating gene between us, I think we have done okay. My husband’s “cafe latte” idea gave us a guide, and the final effect is “WOW”. The creamy walls have been highlighted with white closed eves, and all other accents are brown: paving, garage doors, planters, and the cladding which is now almost complete. At the last minute we added some window art to our front glass expanse. We were feeling a bit exposed. You could see right through the house from the street due to the open plan design, and a bit of privacy was necessary. Thanks to the team from Windowart for their prompt and efficient service.

The completed paving has rounded off the look beautifully. The guys from really grafted, it was all done in four days. At the same time, the cladding was going up on the chimneys, and the last little bit is being erected on the front pillars at the moment. The outdoor staircase was tiled over the weekend. Again, a lovely dark brown “Kilimanjaro” non-slip tile.

The plastering of the perimeter wall is finished, and a white undercoat is being painted. We have been assured that the steel work on the front wall will be complete by next Wednesday which means (drum roll) that we can think about moving in.

The stairs inside are becoming a real saga. Unfortunately we are back to square one: i.e. phone calls and quotes after my husband fired the original steel chap. The stairs should be a real feature, so we decided not to compromise, and rather source what we really want. There are really only two things outstanding with the interior: the bath in the main bathroom was installed skew and needs to be reinserted, and the drawers of the kitchen and built in cupboards need attention. We will be compiling a snag list shortly, I dare say there are a few other minor issues, but on the whole, the interior looks amazing! Really!

We had a funny moment the other night; I was preparing a salad, merrily chopping green pepper when the knife started crunching a bit. On closer examination, the pepper was covered in tiny speckles of concrete. I had picked it from my potted garden which had obviously also succumbed to the high pressure concrete spray. Another good reason….

I am starting to count down sleeps now. So exciting! What a privilege and a blessing to have such an amazing, stunning house.
