Build it green – part 30

Written by admin

One glorious day, one momentous event – we moved in! I spend a while gazing around the beautiful new house. It is stunning, absolutely stunning! It has exceeded my expectations. I eventually get stuck under the chandelier in the entrance; I am spellbound: the sun is streaming through the windows and refracting through the crystals. There are tiny rainbows glistening over the wall: God’s blessing is what rainbows signify, after all.

The preceding week had obviously been a curtain week. The new drapes for the “great room” arrived and were hung while we were out. We got back to a transformed living area. Suddenly the whole feel is softer, and the 6m drape in the front window lends an air of luxury – wow! The colours are perfect too – huge thanks to Marijke for her hard work! Unfortunately my own efforts were a bit of a letdown. I discovered that one drop of my newly-bought curtains was too short, and I had underestimated material for one of my daughter’s rooms, so I will be heading back to the shops soon again.

The cladding is finished, including cladding around the fireplace indoors. It needs a bit of a touch up still, but the effect is great. The kitchen needs a few finishing touches on the cupboards, but I have oodles of packing space. We have an ever-shortening snag list, and an ever increasing satisfied feeling!

There have been two noticeable observations about the new house now that we are living there: firstly, the house is warm. Friends have already commented on how lovely and warm the house stays at night. During the day, one needs to open up the windows for a bit of a through-breeze, but we close these at about 5pm and sleep in short-pyjamas! Secondly, the sound insulation. Owing to the open-plan design, sounds inside the house can be heard resonating all over, but as soon as the windows and doors are closed, there is not a sound from outside. Even the crickets abruptly cease their chirruping when the windows close.

Our bathrooms have not disappointed either. We await the last glass shower door for the master bathroom, but are already enjoying the spa bath, and the LED lights in the shower heads.

So far so good. Almost unpacked…. Now if I could just find where I packed my clothes pegs?

Thank you for following me through our LSF journey. I would like to give you a final report when our steel staircase arrives. So long, from our rainbow….
