The Chamber of Curiosity

Written by Jess Binns

Well thought-out interior design books of the weighty, coffee-table variety have to be in my top five gifts that I love giving. Like a picture book for adults, the satisfaction of leafing through image after image of awe-inspiring interiors is and always will be a favourite pastime.

The Chamber of Curiosity by Gestalten, is one such book I really need to get my hands on. It is based on the reasoning that the true essence of an unforgettable interior should tell a story where the owner’s personality is reflected. The book takes you on a magical journey where homes defy trends and the concept of “keeping up with the Joneses” and challenge conformity with clashing of styles and genres.

I have to mention at this point that many of the homes you witness belong to designers and architects from all over the globe, so I guess the more outrageous the character, the more weird and wonderful the interior!  Designer, David Hurlbut, reflects: “A home should first entertain the owner, then the owner’s guests.”

From what I’ve witnessed so far, subtle theatrics do have a place in the home, after all, we are all unique as humans, so why would be want our homes to be anything less?
