Changing spaces

A home that combines elegance, modern lines and practicality might seem a tall order, but it was what the owners really wanted for their house, located on an estate in Midrand.

The original layout wasn’t accommodating their needs, which included functionality for family living and an updated contemporary interior.

“This project was a complete renovation,” says the interior designer. “We had to ensure that all the various design elements came together and told the same story.”

The living areas were expanded and now form a cohesive open-plan space, incorporating a lounge, kitchen and dining room. A neutral base palette maintains a clean appearance, while brighter shades of red and patterns have been introduced in the upholstery, such as scatter cushions, rugs and fabric-covered dining chairs, to provide interest. Mirrors, glass-topped furniture and lighting, with their reflective qualities, add to the sense of space.

From the living area, there’s an easy transition to the outside, as doors lead to a deck and swimming pool.

Despite the desired openness, so that the family can enjoy different activities in one space, the interior designer also included intimate areas. There are strategically placed fireplaces, a home cinema and pyjama lounge for relaxing.

The main bedroom was also enlarged and transformed into a sophisticated, yet soothing space. A bulkhead above the bed area creates a focal point, along with a stitched and studded headboard. Luxurious elements include velvet, linen and chenille fabrics, textured metallic wallpaper and a silk rug, which are all in soft tones for restfulness.

“This is the owners’ favourite room in the home. They love spending time in there,” says the interior designer. Dark wood pedestals tie in with the furniture in the rest of the house.

Another feature of the natural world brought into the home is the large art piece in the main bathroom. A seaside scape, it frames the bath and complements the simple white decor.

The owners were overjoyed at the final product. Achieving their brief was all done to careful planning, says the interior designer. He shares this advice for those wanting to give their home a complete overhaul: “Engage with all the relevant parties, and get the designs and plans in place before you start the physical build, as this makes sure all the parties are on the same page and there is a shared end vision.”
