Dining Room How To

Choosing the right dinnerware

Whether you prefer to take your time enjoying a meal, every bite, or are one of those people that are always on the go, more concerned with grabbing a quick bite before getting on with the next task, quality dinnerware is always something you should invest in.

Having the right dinner set, cutlery and glassware is equally as important to hosting a memorable gathering – perhaps even more important than the food that will be served at the table. That is why it is important to to buy some good quality dinnerware. But with so many different sets to choose from, it can prove difficult to decide which the right one for you is. Here are four things to consider when looking for quality dinnerware:

  • When shopping for fine China, hold the piece up to the sun. If it is the real deal, you will be able to see the outline of your hand through it.
  • Make sure there is coating over its surface that can easily handle being washed by hand or in a dishwasher. This coating also protects dinnerware from scratching easily.
  • When in doubt, keep it simple and stick to basic colours. The most popular dinner sets seem to be derivatives of classic styles, as people believe they never date. White, for example, remains popular because it will not fade and showcases food well.
  • While price is not always the best measure of quality, it should serve as a guide.  You might find what you think is a bargain only to find your plates start cracking after the second wash. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.
